Naked and Famous’s Brandon Svarc
We had the chance to sit down with Brandon Svarc, the owner and designer of Naked and Famous, our favorite curator of Japanese selvedge denim. This season he released a raspberry scratch and sniff selvedge jean and talked about American Rag on Playboy Radio.
What was your original dream job?Creating a brand of innovative and amazing candy.Favorite pet?None please. Well, my wife has a bunny named Cinnamon and it’s pretty cute…Worst date? This is sad, but I can’t even remember… I’ve been with my lady for over 10 years now!Last song you downloaded?“Can’t Hardly Stand It” by Charlie Feathers. It’s an amazing 1950s rockabilly song that was covered incredibly by The Cramps in the 70s.Your mode of transportation? My car!Your ideal day off?Antiquing all over Quebec for vintage industrial stuff and 1950s Fire King products.Favorite local hangout? My own store… Tate + Yoko!Who’s your favorite designer?Mr.Kobayashi of The Flat Head. He’s an obsessed vintage collector of jeans, overalls, Hawaiian shirts, furniture, Coke products, vintage Michael Jordan action figures, etc… He even owns 2 1950s style diners in Nagano, Japan! If you could have one superpower, what would it be?Whenever I do something stupid like drink too much, or drive to NYC on little sleep, I always tell my family that it’s ok because I’m invincible… so it would be nice if I could actually be invincible. If you could have a beer with anyone, who would it be?Lou Reed. I would love to hear stories of The Velvet Underground back in the day!
What are your favorite pair of jeans that you have ever created?

If anyone was to ask me “what is your favorite pair of jeans that you have ever created?”… my answer is our 32oz selvedge denim jeans… The heaviest pair of jeans ever made! We have worked to build this jean for 2 years and I can say with certainty that it was by far the most difficult production challenge we have ever overcome. Most people ask me “why the hell would you make a pair of jeans that is so heavy and uncomfortable?” and it’s a fair question… I often reply with an analogy “Why would someone climb mount Everest?” It’s not comfortable to do, its not easy, nor is it inexpensive… people do it so they can say they conquered the tallest mountain in the world. I find that human beings are fascinated by anything that is a superlative. Well, these jeans are my denim superlative. From weaving the denim to cutting and sewing to installing the 15oz leather patch, this process has been a marvel of Japanese production skills.
